Consumers make alternative payment methods the new normal

The future of online payments

Where would we be without alternative payment methods (APMs) in the 2020s? After all, research has found that 55% of all online transactions in 2019 were completed using a payment method other than a credit card (aka an APM). Relying solely on the traditional banking system for global eCommerce, instead of offering payment via digital wallets like Apple Pay or Google Pay, is like relying only on a landline to conduct all your business – you could probably do it, but it’s an inefficient experience.

Alternative payment methods are what your mobile phone, integrated customer service experiences, and business apps are to the landline. Simply put: They are necessary for today’s global age because that’s what customers want to use, and merchants need to offer. Plus, who knows anyone in Gen Z who even has a landline?

Customers opt for local payment options

The name APM is a bit misleading because APMs have gone mainstream, and without them, you are missing out on sales. Notably, research found that 75% of all shopping carts are abandoned in the payment phase of checkout. This is, in part, attributable to the consumer’s preferred payment method not being available.

As eCommerce becomes global, the demand for preferred and local payment methods has also skyrocketed. When it comes to payments, consumers want choice, especially when it comes to their favored language, currency, and method. This is why merchants everywhere are adding new payment methods like Apple Pay, Google Pay, iDeal, Swish, Klarna, WeChat, Alipay, PayPal and more, to lose fewer people and drop fewer sales.

When you offer only one or two payment options, you are missing out on an international consumer base. That’s where Ginger comes in: We provide an easy integration experience for you, which provides a seamless checkout experience for them. Ginger integrates any APM into an existing payments ecosystem, and works with banks or payment service providers who want to capitalize upon adding localized payment solutions.
